GridTrade vs Edgewonk

Edgewonk is the OG German-built trading journal — desktop software, one-time license, deep statistical analysis. GridTrade is the cloud-native alternative — multi-device sync, mobile PWA, native multi-account, monthly subscription. The interesting question isn't "which is better." It's "which model fits how you actually work."

Built by a German solo founder who genuinely respects what the Edgewonk team shipped — but bet the future is cloud-first. Objective comparison based on publicly available information. See the full Legal & Source notice at the bottom of this page.

TL;DR — Two different bets

Pick GridTrade if
  • You journal trades from multiple devices (phone right after the trade, deep review at desktop)
  • You run multiple funded accounts simultaneously
  • You prefer a subscription with continuous updates over a frozen license
  • Cloud sync between devices is a hard requirement
  • You want a clean modern UI over feature-rich legacy depth
Stick with Edgewonk if
  • You journal from one fixed desktop and never on mobile
  • You prefer one-time payment + permanent license over subscription
  • You need very deep statistical decomposition (SQN, system quality, R-curve regression) out-of-the-box
  • Offline-only / no-cloud is a feature for you (full data sovereignty)

Pricing — the long-term math

The most-asked question: "Edgewonk is one-time, GridTrade is monthly — isn't Edgewonk just cheaper long-term?" Math says yes after ~6 months. Reality is more nuanced. Here are both honestly:

Edgewonk one-time license
~$169
one-time, lifetime of major version
  • + No recurring cost
  • + Data lives on your machine
  • - New major version = new license fee
  • - No cloud sync, no mobile
GridTrade subscription
€24.99/mo
€299.88/year, cancel anytime
  • + Always latest version
  • + Cloud sync + mobile + new features
  • - Recurring cost
  • - Stop paying = account idles (data preserved, no access)

Breakeven: roughly month 7. After that, the one-time-license model is mathematically cheaper — assuming no future paid major-version upgrade (a general possibility with most software, not a specific Edgewonk claim), assuming you don't need mobile journaling, and assuming the product roadmap stays compatible with your workflow. For many modern day traders those assumptions don't fully hold; for some they do. If they do for you, a one-time-license model is rationally cheaper long-term.

3 differences worth thinking about

1. Cloud vs Desktop

Where do you actually journal?

Edgewonk lives on one desktop. If you reformat, you migrate files. If you change Macs, you re-license. If you want to log a trade 5 minutes after closing it from your phone in a coffee shop — you can't. GridTrade is cloud-first: every device sees the same data instantly. The PWA installs like a native app on iOS/Android. For traders who do post-trade journaling in-the-moment (best for emotion accuracy), the model matters.

2. Emotion: structured field vs aggregate score

Granularity wins for analysis.

Edgewonk includes a Trading Mind Score concept (their feature; see edgewonk.com for current scope) as part of their mental-edge tooling — we think it's a thoughtful idea. GridTrade approaches the same problem differently: one structured emotion field (1-5) per trade that's filterable alongside the other 8 dimensions. You can ask "win rate on NQ trades at emotion ≥ 4 on Fridays after 11am." That kind of specific cross-tabulation is GridTrade's design intent — not better or worse than Edgewonk's, just a different design bet.

3. Multi-account is a native object, not a workaround

Funded-account-first design.

Edgewonk supports multiple journals, but switching between FTMO 50k, Apex 100k, and Live means opening different files. GridTrade ships multi-account as a built-in object: each account has its own balance/equity-curve/trades, but unified analytics across them. Funded-account traders running 2-4 challenges simultaneously feel this difference fast.

Where Edgewonk genuinely wins

  • Statistical depth. Edgewonk's System Quality Number, R-multiple distribution analysis, expectancy decomposition by setup — these are mature, well-considered tools refined over 8+ years. GridTrade covers the core (PF, WR, Expectancy, Streaks, Long/Short split, Best/Worst trade) but isn't trying to compete on pure statistical breadth. If you live in the stats, Edgewonk is the deeper bench.
  • Data sovereignty. Your trade data stays on your computer. No third-party server, no cloud breach risk, no "what if the company shuts down." For some traders, that's worth more than any feature. (GridTrade mitigates this with JSON/CSV export anytime + EU GDPR hosting — but "on my hard drive" is still the strongest possible privacy story.)
  • One-time payment psychology. No recurring decisions. Pay once, use forever. For traders who hate monthly subscriptions on principle, that mental model is real and valid.

Frequently asked

I already own Edgewonk. Why would I switch?

Honest answer: don't, unless one of these matters to you — (1) you want mobile journaling, (2) you run multiple funded accounts and want them in one workflow, (3) you're switching computers and re-installing/re-licensing is becoming a pain. If those don't apply, your Edgewonk install is fine. Run both for 14 days during the GridTrade trial and decide based on actual usage.

Can I import my Edgewonk data into GridTrade?

Direct integration: not yet. You can export from Edgewonk as CSV, but our import is currently manual — by design, we want you to re-touch trades during migration (forces a review). A CSV importer is on the roadmap for traders with 500+ historical trades.

What if GridTrade shuts down?

Fair question for any cloud SaaS. You can export your full data as JSON/CSV anytime — and we publish quarterly status updates on revenue + runway transparency. The single-founder model means no VC pressure to pivot or shut down. GridTrade is built to run for the long term on its own subscription revenue.

Is GridTrade also German-built like Edgewonk?

Yes — solo-founded by Fabian Lehmann in Germany. Servers in Frankfurt (Hetzner). GDPR by default. EU privacy law on every layer. If "German engineering" was part of why you trust Edgewonk, GridTrade carries the same flag — just on the modern cloud-native side.

Does GridTrade have a one-time payment option?

No — cloud sync, weekly updates, infrastructure (Hetzner + Supabase + Stripe) all have ongoing costs, so subscription is the honest model. Single tier, €24.99/month, no add-on tiers, cancel anytime.
